Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2)
Advocating for open science and source
About
The Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI2) was founded in 2014 by Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft, as a non-profit research institute dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence for the common good. Located in Seattle, AI2 is renowned for its commitment to open and collaborative AI research, which extends remarkably into the field of generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) 13. One of AI2's groundbreaking projects in generative AI is the Open Language Model (OLMo), a state-of-the-art LLM. OLMo is distinct from many other large language models because it is entirely open-source. Everything from its code and model weights to its training dataset—Dolma, a massive 3 trillion token corpus—is made accessible to the public 5. This unprecedented transparency is motivated by AI2's mission to democratize access to advanced AI technologies, encouraging wider collaboration and accelerating progress in AI research. Beyond the development of OLMo, AI2's research portfolio includes numerous other areas of artificial intelligence. Their projects range from deep learning and natural language processing to computer vision and the development of common-sense AI systems, such as Aristo and PRIOR. Aristo aims at creating AI systems capable of reasoning and explaining their answers, while PRIOR focuses on advancing computer vision with AI systems that can perceive and reason about the world 24. AI2 actively fosters collaboration through partnerships with institutions like the University of Washington and initiatives like the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) pilot program. These collaborations underscore the institute's dedication to open research and its significant contributions to the AI community at large 125. Through such partnerships and its open approach to AI development, AI2 continues to stand out as a leader and innovator in the field of generative AI and LLMs.
