The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) is a pivotal entity in advancing AI research and development in Saudi Arabia, particularly focusing on generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs). Established in 2019, SDAIA has played a crucial role as the central authority overseeing all facets of data, artificial intelligence, and big data within the Kingdom. It operates with a mandate linked directly to the Prime Minister, enabling it to act with both financial and administrative independence. Among its diverse initiatives, SDAIA’s active involvement in generative AI stands out. The agency has developed the ALLaM system, a sophisticated AI platform intended to understand and answer questions posed in Arabic across various knowledge domains. This initiative underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to enriching the Arabic content available in AI technologies, addressing a significant gap in the global AI landscape. Its collaboration with IBM led to the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Generative AI. As part of this collaboration, the ALLaM challenge has been established to elevate existing LLMs, particularly in Arabic, enhancing their reliability and breadth. This effort is complemented by training programs that have equipped 80 specialists with expertise in LLMs, aligning with the Vision 2030 goals. Additionally, SDAIA's partnership with Oliver Wyman focuses on creating frameworks to evaluate and boost AI maturity among government entities and enterprises.
