Thinking Machines Lab is an AI research and product company founded by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati in February 2025. The company is focused on developing AI systems that are understandable, controllable, and aligned with human values. Its founding team includes notable AI researchers such as John Schulman (co-founder of OpenAI), Barret Zoph (former VP of Research at OpenAI), Bob McGrew (former Chief Research Officer at OpenAI), and Alec Radford. The company raised $2 billion in an early-stage funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, with participation from Nvidia, AMD, Cisco, and Jane Street, at a valuation of $12 billion. Thinking Machines Lab launched Tinker, an API for fine-tuning open-weight language models, as its first product in October 2025. The company's research efforts include work on making AI model inference more deterministic and developing strong foundations for more capable AI systems.
